What is (Contemporary) Shamanic Counseling?

Shamanic counseling is a form of spiritual healing that utilizes practices rooted in ancient and contemporary-style shamanic traditions, where a practitioner guides clients into altered states of consciousness through techniques like drumming, visualization, parts work, and journeying to access their subconscious and inner wisdom, aiming to address emotional, physical, and spiritual imbalances and promote personal growth and healing; essentially, it involves using shamanic practices within a therapeutic setting to explore the deeper aspects of oneself and facilitate healing on multiple levels.

Shamanic practitioners traditionally believe in accessing a non-ordinary reality, a realm beyond the physical world, to connect with spirit guides and receive healing information; this is often explored through guided meditations and altered states in shamanic counseling. The intention  is to address the whole person, looking at emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of wellbeing.

What is Holistic Spiritual Counseling?

It is a form of psychotherapy known for its tactful integration of spirituality with psychotherapeutic guidance and care, and focusing on understanding and integrating different parts of oneself, called parts work. Spiritual counseling is also known as spiritual guidance, and can be a type of therapy that helps people explore their spiritual nature and find meaning in their lives. It can be based on a specific religion or a broader set of spiritual ideas, and it's open to people of all faiths or no faith at all.

As a Holistic Spiritual Counselor, Josephine may use techniques such as meditation, prayer, mindfulness, parts work, somatic shamanism, somatic journeying, and visualization. She may also ask open-ended questions, reflect thoughts back to her clients, and allow space for silence, reflection, and delving into the wisdom that lies within.

How Contemporary Shamanic Counseling and Holistic Spiritual Counseling work together:

  • Holistic healing therapy: Therapists can combine elements of both Buddhist and Shamanic counseling to address a client's emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs simultaneously.

  • Parts work: A therapeutic approach that views individuals as having different "parts" within themselves, like sub-personalities, and focuses on identifying, understanding, and healing the conflicts between these parts. The goal is to help individuals identify and understand their different parts, especially those that might be causing distress or hindering personal growth, and to eventually integrate them in a more harmonious way.

  • Altered states of consciousness: Shamanism uses altered states of consciousness to help clients connect with spirit beings. Therapists can also help clients enter an altered state of consciousness to enhance therapeutic goals.

  • Power animals: Clients can connect with power animals or spirit guides for support and information on specific issues.

  • Mindfulness: Both Shamanic and spiritual counseling can include mindfulness meditation.

  • Rituals: Shamanic counseling can include rituals like prayer, drumming, and guided meditation.

  • Spiritual dimensions: Shamanic models emphasize closeness to the natural world and spiritual dimensions of life.

  • Personal empowerment: Shamanism can help clients feel empowered and in control of their body chemistry.

  • Root cause therapy: A healing modality that aims to identify and treat the underlying causes of a person's current symptoms, rather than just treating the symptoms themselves. The goal is to heal painful emotions and traumas that may be causing limiting beliefs, negative thoughts, and unhelpful coping mechanisms. Root cause therapy works on both the conscious and unconscious mind. It can help people unravel why they think, feel, or do the way they do, and discover and shift unwanted patterns.

  • Embodiment Coaching: A practice that helps people become more aware of their physical sensations and emotional states, and to develop a deeper connection with their bodies. The goal is to help people gain greater insights into themselves, which can lead to lasting change. Embodiment coaching is based on the idea that the body holds important information about our thoughts, emotions, and experiences. It can help people reconnect with their inner wisdom and develop a more balanced and fulfilling life.

  • Integrative Modalities: Additional modalities such as Reiki, Energy Therapy, or Chakra and Aura Cleansing and Balancing, Somatic Movement, Sound Healing Therapy, Reflexology, Massage Therapy, High Touch(R) Jin Shin Acupressure, Prayer, Meditation, Mantra, Mindfulness, Shamanic Journeying and Healing, Hypnotic or Trance-like Visualization, or other complementary therapies and spiritual practices may be implemented or integrated into the sessions to best serve and support the client.

Josephine's approach to Holistic Shamanic Counseling:

Sessions are not structured in one specific manner. Josephine's approach is to listen to the concern, aid in recognizing patterns stored in the body from the various aspects or parts of self, empowering you to discover for yourself the patterns of thoughts (beliefs), and the energy pattern correlated in the body's energy field felt through physical sensations, to recognize, appreciate, and shift the energy physically, mentally, and emotionally. She guides, counsels, and supports you to access deeper layers of the psyche, and interpreting physical sensations experienced during a form of shamanic journeying into yourself and your energy field, as a reflection of emotional and spiritual states; essentially, using the body as a tool to access and heal deeper trauma and emotional issues, fears, concerns, upsets, and difficult circumstances. To have a better understanding of Josephine's background with contemporary shamanism, read more, here.

Josephine may guide the client to focus on bodily sensations like tightness, warmth, or tingling, which can represent emotional states or spiritual energies encountered. She may incorporate movement and breathwork techniques, such as gentle movement of the body, Qigong, or specific breathing patterns, to facilitate deeper connection with the body and access altered states, or parts of ones consciousness, or subconscious. During sessions, Josephine encourages working with personal guides, angelic presence, soul awareness, and a higher power of your understanding, as well as ancestors, and the wisdom of the auric field and body, as applicable.

It is understood more than ever before, that being the soulful awareness that we are, will allow the flawed premises to fall away. It's not about healing yourself, or someone else being your healer. It's about realizing that you are the space in the present moment, emanating the well-being life force energy that you are. We all forget sometimes. As a practitioner, I am here to remind you and walk with you as you rediscover how to light your path by shining your light even brighter. Ask yourself, "When was the last time I danced?" ~ Josephine

The spiritual world and material world are fundamentally connected.

"Josephine is a gifted healer and mentor. I took the Soul-Wise sessions [now primarily considered an aspect of Shamanic Journeying and Energy Center Attunement] from her and found these sessions to be inspirational.

Josephine is a gentle guide that led me to experience my soul's essence. It was a very special moment for me when I felt the light around me and the peace it brought.

I highly recommend Josephine for spiritual guidance and look forward to taking more time with her in the future."  - Pat D.
